Golfing Ed(ucator)
As first appearances go, Ed Gregory looks like your "normal" golf
fanatic. One look around the outside of his Greenfield home reveals the
"typical" links passion from the caricature of a golfer swinging on his
mailbox to the golfer weathervane on his garage to the mini three-hole
layout he built out back to help his short game.
But there's more than window dressing to Gregory's love of the
game. Inside his house resides a 2,000 + volume golf library (which he
believes to be the largest in New England) taking up space over three rooms.
And what will golf book number 2,001 be on Ed's shelves? Country Club
of Greenfield: The Centennial History, which he has just finished
writing.
Then there's the basement, where the full-time supervisor at a
South Deerfield cutting tool company runs a hobby business called Golfserv.
Among many services, he builds, repairs and appraises clubs, buys and
trades golf books and provides golf research, photography and videography.
For more information on Golfserv, call Ed at (413) 772-6677 or send e-mail
to golfserv@crocker.com.
Since this article was written, the library now houses over 3000
volumes. PLAYER - The Magazine of The Golf Society of The United States /

Charter Member Ed Gregory Is
a Regular Jack-of-All-Trades
When Ed Gregory heads home after a round of golf, he never leaves
the game behind. He breathes it day to day, in one form or another.
In fact, you could say his home in Greenfield, MA, is a testament
to golf. There's the 2,000-book private golf library, spread over three
rooms, which he claims is the largest in New England; the mini three-hole
layout in the backyard to help with his short game; the golfer
weathervane prominently situated on the garage; and the black-and-white
caricature of a golfer swinging on both sides of the mailbox.
Oh, yes, as a hobby he runs a fairly successful business, called
Golfserv, from his basement. Among his many services, he builds,
repairs and appraises golf clubs, buys and trades books, and does golf
research, photography and videography. In other words, he's a
jack-of-all-trades.
"I drive my wife nuts - not to mention I have the Golf Channel on
all the time," admits Gregory, a 10 to I2-handicapper and member of the
Golf Collectors Society who just finished writing his first golf book,
Country Club of Greenfield: The Centennial History.
A full-time supervisor with a cutting tool company in South
Deerfield, MA, Gregory has offered club repairs and custom club building
for 22 years.
"Most golfers I see don't properly maintain the grips" he says.
"I keep my grips for four years between changes because I take the time
to clean them at least once a month. The proper care of your clubs can
definitely make a difference in their playability and overall life"
